I did that--well, not very well, and a very long time ago. I loved gymnastics when I was young. I loved the beam (I did that moderately well), the floor (mediocre) and the uneven parallel bars (fun, but I was just ok). I didn't like the vault - I just couldn't make it over. I've always had tremendous respect for the discipline and hard work (and pain) that goes into this sport.
It was so great to see young women from Cal, UCLA and San Jose State compete in gymnastics. The crowd was small but enthusiastic. These women performed with gusto and joy, and even when they didn't quite make it, their sisters were there to cheer them on and give them hugs when they finished. I love gymnastics for that reason. You compete for your team, but you are on your own as you do your sport. It's mentally and physically challenging, psyching yourself up, but not out, and if you miss--you've got to pick yourself up off the floor (literally) and finish with
