Coming Home

I'm fortunate to have friends who are interested in supporting me in my endeavors. Tonight for instance, Kate invited me to join her to see "Coming Home" by Athol Fugard at Berkeley Rep, a multitude of monologues about a woman with AIDs, raising her young son in South Africa.

I called Kate after arriving at Berkeley BART only to find that she had just been pick-pocketed and had her wallet stolen. I figured the evening was off, but Kate, trooper that she is, arrived just as the lights were flashing on and off, fully composed. I can honestly say that I would have been a complete mess, but Kate was completely together. "What can I do about it?" Me--cry; throw a temper tantrum; curl up into a fetal position. Frankly, I could think of lots of things. Kate however, sat down, relaxed and enjoyed the play (and maybe a little nap--I think we both snoozed just a bit).

The play was good, in spite of the funky, ever-so-slightly-off accents, but the real story was Kate's composure--Brilliant!

  • Fun: 4 (theater is fun)
  • Easy to implement: 1 (hopped on BART)
  • Worthy of repetition: 4 (love Berkeley Rep)
  • Try This: 4
  • Cost: 1 (Kate's treat)
