Jew(ish)

Okay, so let's get one thing clear, I was born a Jew; I will always be a Jew, but as far as religion is concerned, I'm Jew-ish (emphasis on the "ish"). So why would someone who's on the edge of agnostic, bordering on atheist belong to a synagogue? I like it as a vehicle for social action.

I became co-chair of Temple Sinai's Social Action Committee three years ago. One of our annual functions is the Social Action Shabbat - tonight was that Shabbat-my once a year foray into Judaism.

Tonight we welcomed Youth Uprising an amazing youth run organization that helps keep kids off the streets, mentors, teaches, coaches and provides a safe and nurturing environment for at-risk youth. I was so inspired by Jacky Johnson, the outreach and events coordinator and one of their youth coordinators, that I volunteered my husband to help out in some way (surprise John!). Well, in all fairness to John, I just told YU that I thought he could help inspire the kids through performance or a teaching demonstration like he did out at a school in Hunter's Point.

Tonight's Shabbat reminded me of the value that the synagogue provides in supporting organizations like YU in the spirit of Tikkun Olam. It reminded me of why I continue to belong and (occasionally) attend.
