Alison turned 30 yesterday-I remember my 30th birthday. It was the end of my so-called youth and I had just gotten married a couple of months before. Thirty seemed so adult to me-sophisticated. It wasn't anything like forty where I sat by a pool one month prior in Hawaii and cried for an hour. That moment in"when Harry met Sally" was replayed, but instead of "being 40 one day", one day was just
One month away.
So last night Alison celebrated her thirtieth with her friends and colleagues. We had cocktails at Sens in the Embarcadero; and while Alison was lamenting, all I could think about was, how did I get to almost 50? How is it that just 9 years ago I was sitting by that pool thinking "oh my god, where did the time go?"
But my silver lining last night was that as I was enjoying the evening with my younger friends, across the bar I spied one of my oldest and dearest friends from college-Paul. Paul and I were close like a brother and sister and seeing him reminded me that some things get better with age.
