It is the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, so what better to do during the olympics than go check out a curling clinic at the Oakland Ice Skating Arena. I checked on line before heading down town only to find out...wait for it... it SOLD OUT! I had no idea that curling even existed south of Banff!
The San Francisco Curling Club holds clinics and teaches people how to curl. I'm intrigued. I decide to not attend the clinic but rather sit in the bleachers and observe.
The purpose of the sport is to get the "stone" from one end of the rink to the other and into the bulls eye. One person lets the stone fly and two others run ahead of the stone (in shoes, not skates) and "sweep" the ice to create friction which allows the stone to slide further across the ice.
I have to admit, it seems like something that is more likely to be played in Fargo rather than Oakland, but there was an enthusiastic group of somewhere around 40 people who participated in tonight's clinic.
After watching, I may not pursue the curling club, but I certainly enjoyed a rousing evening of becoming a curling enthusiast.
