first: ahhh, "the internets" - I'm baaaaaack! Phew. And, yes, AT&T is pretty fast.
second: going to a movie mid-week feels like a treat. I don't know why, but I guess I feel like movies are saved up special for the weekend. however, the great thing about a mid-week movie--no yackers! why? 'cause there's hardly anyone there! We went to the Rafael theater, which has been nicely redone (since I was a tot seeing Disney movies there).
Sarah and I had both read "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and loved it. We felt inclined to see if the Swedish movie would hold up to the book. the verdict was--yeah, pretty much. The book was fairly long, so they did have to take some liberties, but for the most part, they captured the key elements and made the characters come alive. One thing about Sweden's movie factory, with all of the beauty in that country, they sure found a homely group to portray the main characters.
Sarah and I discussed Colin Firth playing Bloomquist, and that possibly Natalie Portman could play Salander - though Natalie could be too old now (ouch!). We agreed that just 'cause she's "A-list", Kristen Stewart would not make a good Salander (too glum, not edgy enough, not enough depth to play that character) and we also agreed that Clooney would not be a good Bloomquist - too pretty.
I actually liked the Swedish actress Noomi Rapace who played Salander--she definitely fit the bill physically, captured the intensity of the character without being pouty - and she was tough. This movie did a lot of foreshadowing, so we're ready for the sequel. Right now I'm just trying to get through Book 3, "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest."
