Social Action

Last night was the last Social Action committee meeting of Temple Sinai for the rest of the year (not including the pot luck). We had a packed agenda with guest speakers. Admittedly, this was the first time in a while where I felt momentum. We had two interesting speakers and decided to proceed with a speaker series for next year (three events), something I've been wanting to do for some time. I want to get local activists in to talk about timely issues. Last night, Terry Blechner of winning situations discussed her work in getting companies/people to stop filling up the land fills with usable goods and get them to people/organizations that need them.

We also had Ellen Augustine speak about her group, Not My Priorities where the point is that budgets represent family values/social values. Currently the majority of the US Budget goes to the Pentagon (577 Billion), which is equivalent to all other countries military budgets combined.

We also had Sally Hindman speak about her group, Youth Spirit Artwork, where at risk youth work on art projects to help build up their skills and keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

I felt that each of these nascent organizations is doing something meaningful and exciting and I'm excited to help bring their work to a larger group of people.
