Beat Poetry

When I was in college as an English major, I studied beat literature- from Kerouac to Ginsberg . Tonight I got to hear a living legend read his poetry here in Berkeley. Michael McClure was here at Moe's to read from his book. What better place for a Beat to read than in the "People's Republic of Berkeley"?

Moe's even had a small reception with strawberries and champaign.

To put into perspective as to why Mcclure is impressive, he read at Gallery Six where Ginsberg read "Howl". He also performs with Ray Manzarek of The Doors. I have to admit that even at something around 70, the man is intriguing and relevant.

He read from his book of poetry, "Mysteriosos". His voice was deep and smooth- silky. Sometimes the poems felt pretentious, short snippets, five to ten words and then a smirk-sometimes a re-read to get the words an emphasis just right. Other times the poems flowed out, lovely and meaningful.

One thing I realized is that I'm more of a proser than poety-ite. I want to like it, want to feel it, but I think the idea of poetry is more romantic to me rather than offering actual enjoyment.
