Compassion vs Contempt

John (husband) suggested that I make sandwiches and hand them out to the homeless. I found out today that I couldn't go more than a block without finding someone in need as I walked the 12 minutes from the base of the bridge to my office.

Earlier in the morning, I made lunch bags with a turkey and cheese sandwich and an organic apple. As I walked by the Transbay Terminal, each person that I saw, I asked, "would you like a sandwich?" I was greeted with appreciation from all but one who simply declined. In most cases I received a blessing.

I think the one thing that I found was that having the food available to hand out gave me more compassion rather than having to stare through or past these people to avoid them. I was able to provide them with something they needed without judgment (which seems to come with money). I liked feeling that way and will most definitely repeat this experiment.

  • Life Changing: 2 (not really, but eye opening)
  • Fun: 2 (sad, but felt good)
  • Easy to implement: 1 (easy)
  • Worthy of repetition: 5 (you betcha)
  • Try This: 5 (try this)
  • Cost: 2 (bread, cheese, apples: lunch for 12 or more about $6.00)
