MLK Day

The Piedmont Celebrating Diversity Group and the City of Piedmont put together a community event celebrating Martin Luther King Junior day at the Piedmont Community Center

I had expected to walk into a hall with a looped reel of King's "I have a Dream" speech, however we walked into an empty hall in the midst of a luncheon set-up. We were asked to help by Lois Corrin, who was responsible for this event. We found out that she has been responsible for putting this on for 13 years.
I was excited to see Congresswoman Barbara Lee make an appearance, thank the community and reflect on King's speech. I thoroughly enjoyed the Oakland Youth Choir and Oaktown Jazz presentations. As Khalil Shaheed (leader of Oaktown Jazz) said, "we passed cute a long time ago". The band was great and they underscored the importance of art and music in the schools.

Great time - great way to spend a day and get to know other members of the community.
