On the Bay

It could be summer it's so warm outside. It's almost like a bad joke, "how many days can you go outside in SF with only a sweater?" Today was one of those days, and I decided that it was a perfect day to try the ferry. I hadn't planned it - totally spontaneous, but what the heck. I left about 10 minutes early today and walked down Market to the Ferry building. The Oakland/Alameda ferry isn't quite caught up with the rest of the transit systems, so I had to buy a ticket on board, rather than just use my Translink card.

I boarded and headed upstairs so I could sit outside and enjoy the fresh sea air. There was something so perfect about this day. There was hardly a breeze and the water was flat. Birds flew over head and there were a few small sail boats, an Erickson and a Rawson both sailing past. It reminded me of the few times I really enjoyed sailing with my family - when the weather was perfect and my father wasn't ranting and water wasn't splashing over the bow, and I wasn't down below freezing (but I digress).

I was sitting next to a group of frequent boaters who had brought their own adult beverages and were clearly enjoying their commute home. There was some mention of a "small keg" for their next trip.

I disembarked at Jack London Square and made my way around to the bus, hopped on and travelled downtown where I transfered and then rode home to a 1/2 of a block from my house. The public transportation worked perfectly - hardly any wait time, but the travel time was nearly double.

So the gist is, if you want to get home fast, it's best to stick with the usual mode of transportation. I left work at 4:50 p.m. and arrived at almost 6:30 p.m. If I had caught the 5:20 bus, I would have walked in the door at 5:50, but I would have left work 15 minutes later.

But if you look at the pictures, you'll see that the day could not have been more spectacular and when I did arrive home, I whipped out the martini glass, and made myself a wendelicious tini (absolut, cranberry, and appletini mix), sat outside in our still unfinished, but nearly fabulous back yard and enjoyed downloading "apps" on my new iPhone. Really--not a bad day.
